TORPOR.

Jaja.

(ndr.

¡Venid y decir hola!

TORPOR. Maybe you many not say anything, or you just come to mind hearsay. To us who know them well and we generated the vision of a death foretold. But not as if a doctor told us to suffer something incurable and we have two or three years, no ... that would be too comfortable. We refer to something immediate, inevitably, something that makes you feel helpless and without the slightest glimmer of hope to fight for your life, as if we were bound with wire, surrounding our body, pressed hard to make us bleed to the extent accurate, that is, you lose the forces but just never die. Above us the sluice gates of a dam, and someone provisions controls all the machinery that handles the dock, open them only when he wants. All we know is that the open, sooner or later. This is just an example, what we do today in this interview with torpor, among other things, is to know what other ways would kill us. We talked to Lauren (Bass).

Greetings TORPOR. We would like to start this interview talking about your origins as musicians. As you started in music each of you and when TORPOR had to be born.
-Simon, Nats and myself have all playing in various bands since our teens. Unbelievably Torpor is Jon’s first band…I’m not sure why it took him so long, but we’re glad he took a chance on us! Simon and I had wanted to start a band like this for many years, but just through bad luck and not meeting the right people had never managed to get it off the ground. We finally met Jon and Nats in 2012 through an online ad and it’s worked out pretty well!

Your first album "Bled Dry" caused us a great impact. Has it had the same impact in your country? Tell us how it worked in all this debut album, critics, people's opinions, concerts etc ...
-We recorded Bled Dry live in our practice room as a demo to get our first gigs, so it was a really nice surprise that it ended up getting released…but listening back to it now it sounds like a different band, one who hasn’t quite figured out what they’re doing! We moved on from those songs pretty quickly after it came out. It did what we needed it to do at the time – we played some great gigs and met some great people, but it’s been a relief to release the new album and finally move away from it!

Your sound is like a chainsaw, and an inevitably tormenting sounds in our ears, knowing that it will cut our throats. Leaving aside your equipment (amps, pedals, etc ...) we realize that emerges from the depths of your soul. As you have managed to dig so deep within you to play it this way so hellish?
-I love that description of our sound, thank you! Haha. I’m not sure what that says about us as individuals?! A couple of us definitely have a dark side and use this band as an outlet, but I can’t speak for everyone.

We keep talking about sound. It has influenced the band something in a special way to sound in this aggressive way? We do not refer to groups or their musical influences, but aspects of your life, environment, personal experiences...
-I can only speak for myself and I guess Simon would say the same, but music has always fulfilled a cathartic function in my life. I sought out heavy music from a young age because it represented what I was feeling and gave me an outlet for aggression and expression that nothing else did. It’s a pretty powerful kind of therapy to create the loudest most intense noise you can, scream yourself hoarse, say all the things you ever wanted to say to everyone and nobody at the same time. You’re not really allowed to do that anywhere else! For me, the ultimate goal in playing or experiencing music is to lose myself, I’m always trying to achieve that mindfulness and heavy music really gets me there. When you’re creating such an engulfing wall of sound, there’s not much room for other thoughts.

The voice of Nats, at certain times takes us to Punk and Hardcore few years ago but with a very personal and deeper vocal range. It is your way of remembering the old Underground ambient, and mix it with your latest compositions?
-It wasn’t a conscious decision to look for a vocalist with any particular style, but once we heard what Nats was doing we thought it would be really cool to bring her in. She was keen to get involved with a heavier project and develop the harsher side of her style, so it’s worked out really well for all of us.

Although you keep your musical personality, and your aggressiveness, this new studio album "From Nothing Comes Everything" shows us a new dimension of TORPOR. More elaborate, with quiet moments, it sounds more spiritual and certain changes in your musical philosophy, but this comment is just our opinion. You think they are right?
-We haven’t changed our musical philosophy, I think we’ve just got better at expressing it. As I said earlier, we wrote the songs on Bled Dry in our first 6 months, and they were the first songs Jon had ever written! This album represents us becoming more confident in our own sound, stretching and challenging ourselves, and figuring out what we were capable of. We’re really proud of the record, but there’s definitely things about it that I’d do differently next time around…I’d love the next record to sound rawer and heavier, and experiment more in the studio, but some of the others might disagree!

With a single disc in your career, being a band of relatively recent formation, you've played with powerful groups within the scene and that means that you are at a high level. You think that this disc will open more doors? (ed. We are sure of that)
-I wouldn’t say we’re at a high level, we’re just really lucky to be involved in such a supportive scene in the UK - we met some great bands and promoters quite early on who really helped us, but I do think some people heard the demo and got the wrong impression about who we were and what we were doing. Hopefully this new album will reach more people and open different doors for us, we’d love to play some festivals and maybe tour with some bigger bands.

The creative process of a band is always a mystery. From where the creativity of TORPOR? Hate? To see a world that slowly rots? Trying to understand what you have around, and you realize that you really do not understand anything? Speak from your gut...
-I think we’re all drawn to creating music which has a transformative power, songs which take you on a journey. The music may sound incredibly bleak and harsh, but this is catharsis rather than misery, we are definitely inspired by hope more than hate.

In Spain many people medal "heroes of the Underground" is placed, but then the light of his eyes blind money. Here also true that many people acquire an attitude of Rockstars, giving much importance to the dress and attitude on stage. Perhaps the music of these groups is not powerful enough and seek other formulas to call the public. We think the Underground is the opposite ... It is the same in England?
-I’d love to agree with you, but I think there’s a lot of people concerned with dress and attitude rather than music in the UK underground too! I guess people are attracted to being in bands for lots of different reasons, and success can feed or highlight the more narcissistic elements in a personality. We definitely don’t look ‘right’ in the doom scene…we’ve only got one beard and a handful of tattoos between us! Haha. I get a perverse kick out of looking really normal and playing blisteringly heavy music… You can tell it confuses some people, they don’t quite know whether to trust us or not…which is strange because we’re clearly ALL about the music and don’t really give a shit about our image! You’d think that would work in our favour.

Let's talk about concerts. What can we expect from TORPOR? Will we see you soon in Spain? (ed. If you come to play, we promise to reward your efforts to answer our English wrong with a few beers ...)
-We’ve got some great shows coming up with Conan, Obliterations, and a few others which haven’t been announced yet, plus Desertfest London in April! We’ve been talking about playing shows in Europe for the last two years, so hopefully we’ll manage to organise something and play for you soon! You’ll be the first to know if we do make it over to Barcelona so you can get the beers ready!

This damn crisis is making the rich richer, and the poor poorer, then it is easy to deduce that the crisis is so much talk, does not really exist, and is only an invention of capitalism to create more social difference. You agree? We ask this because it is possible that people have taken the path of music to protest against such injustice. That has always happened, but perhaps now is a remarkable situation. You think so?
-What a question! I have massive respect for anyone involved in social activism be it through music or any other medium, there’s far too much passivity in the world and the crisis is definitely real. Nothing was ever handed to anyone without a fight, standing back and waiting for those in power to right the balance is not an option. Unfortunately most of the time the protest lands on deaf ears…it takes a lot of resilience to carry on!

You speak of political issues in your lyrics? That arises from the head of TORPOR when writing the lyrical content of your compositions?
-We will never be a political band in terms of themes or message, partly because we each have quite different personal ideologies, and it wouldn’t be appropriate or representative to have any one of us voicing his or hers above others. We prefer creating an atmosphere and connecting with people on a more visceral level, rather than making explicit statements. We’re drawn to using more contemplative and personal themes, looking inwards to the self rather than outwards to the world.

As a last question... That means for you the word music?
-Music is an intrinsic aspect of humanity, some say it played a part in the emergence of the human mind, language and cultural cognition. Here’s a lovely quote from Schopenhauer “The inexpressible depth of music...easy to understand and yet so inexplicable, is due to the fact that it reproduces all of the emotions of our innermost being, but entirely without reality and remote from its pain… Music expresses only the quintessence of life and of its events, never these themselves." I’m not sure if that’s the answer you were looking for, but that’s the one you got!

We reached the end of our conversation. It has been an honour to make you this interview, and hopefully not bore you too. If you want to leave a last message to our readers this is your space. As mentioned above, we hope to see you soon in Barcelona (you know the beers are of our own ...) Regards and good luck for the future.
-Thanks guys, and well done to anyone who read this far! Thanks to everyone who has supported us in any way, we see you and it means a lot! Come and say hi!
