Aunque penséis que las preguntas son cortas, hemos querido ser exploradores en busca de respuestas en las entrañas más profundas del cuerpo de SUMA. Y es que, muchas veces es difícil encontrar palabras que no suenen repetitivas en una entrevista. Una banda es más que un disco o un instrumento musical. Por eso mismo ante la visita de la banda sueca, SUMA, que estará en España la semana que viene, hemos querido rascar más en su piel y en su mente para conocerlos más de lo que nos han enseñado con su música. Vamos allá… hablamos con Johan y Erik.

¿Qué es lo que SUMA puede demostrar sobre el escenario, a un oyente que os acaba de conocer?
- En primer lugar y ante todo, se supone que SUMA debe experimentarse en directo. Es una experiencia de cuerpo completo, una máquina enfocada de un poder implacable que alcanzará la profundidad de tu alma. La experiencia en vivo es como una meditación o un viaje, y/o bien estás dentro o estás fuera, aquí no hay término medio.

¿Existen puntos cardinales en las estructuras que consolidan la banda, o es todo puro azar? Contadnos si tenéis bases estables a la hora de crear…
- SUMA ha tenido la misma idea de crear música desde los principios hace casi dos décadas. Por lo general, comienza con un riff, o más bien con EL RIFF que exploramos, giramos y retorcemos, hasta que cada miembro está satisfecho con el producto final. No revelamos ni realizamos nada de lo que no estemos 100% orgullosos. La mayoría de nuestras "canciones" son en realidad solo un riff, a pesar de que somos bastante buenos para esconderlo con variaciones en el mismo tema.

¿Quién es “Suma”? Y no hablamos de las personas que lo componen, sino del pensamiento que dan al nombre cada una de ellas.
- SUMA es nuestra forma de expresarnos a nosotros mismos, exactamente de la manera que queremos, sin filtros y sin preocuparnos por nada ni por nadie, más que a nosotros mismos. SUMA es una ‘bendición’ y somos afortunados y estamos muy orgullosos de poder hacer esto. Con SUMA podemos experimentar el mundo e influenciarlo e incluyendo a las personas con las que nos encontramos… con la música que hacemos y cómo nos comportamos como seres humanos. Siempre tratamos de promover una forma de vida más que cualquier otra cosa. Si nadie lo hace por ti, hazlo tú mismo y sé amable con las personas que te rodean.

El sonido. Crudo, directo, contundente... el caos se apodera de nuestras mentes y nos descuartiza la memoria. Arrastráis un sonido muy profundo, un poder que se puede agarrar con las manos. ¿Qué opináis sobre el sonido que habéis ido “lanzando a los oídos ajenos de la multitud”, durante vuestra trayectoria?
- En los últimos 20 años han estando surgiendo grandes sonidos, muchas formas únicas y diferentes dentro de nuestra intensidad. También hay mucho, que en absoluto no es interesante. Sobre todo, es genial que la música Heavy comience a ser más popular, pero cuando las cosas se hacen populares, siempre habrá menos personas sinceras que quieran un pedazo del pastel.

Si buscamos un adjetivo rápido para definiros, ¿Cuál sería suma?
- Intenso. Fuerte. Pesado.


Ahora hablando de vosotros… ¿Quiénes sois y qué aportáis musical, mental y físicamente a SUMA?
- Soy Erik, el baterista de SUMA. Fuera de la banda, soy padre, esposo y profesor de yoga. Musicalmente contribuyo con cortar los patrones de formas inesperadas y agregar algún tipo de dimensión matemática al riff existente. A veces, esto vuelve locos a los demás. Como soy un practicante de yoga, puedo aportar un enorme poder a mi batería de una manera muy concentrada, algo que es bastante visible para el público en los directos. También colocamos los tambores en la parte delantera del escenario para que la actuación en vivo sea más un ritual. Somos SUMA, somos como una masa, en lugar de individuos.

El domingo día 29, iniciáis la gira europea en el famoso festival de Portugal, Barroselas Metal Fest, y el lunes arrancáis motores para las fechas españolas. 5 paradas, 5 ciudades. Carretera, y más carretera, grandes noches y buena música ¿Estáis preparados? ¿Cómo se encuentran las fuerzas de SUMA ante esta gira? || (Información de la gira española, aquí)
- Jeje, ¡Nacimos listos y estamos tan emocionados de regresar a la península Ibérica…! Tuvimos una preparación diferente para esta gira ya que estuve fuera durante tres semanas en un campamento de entrenamiento de yoga. Tuvimos un buen repaso de las canciones que traeremos y estamos felices de volver a hacer una gira. ¡A todos nos encanta tocar en vivo!

Por último… después de todos los conciertos, viajes, y un merecido descanso, ¿En un futuro, que le depara a SUMA? ¿Seguir presentando el último álbum? ¿Componen nuevos temas…?
- De hecho, estamos componiendo nuevos temas, a pesar de que es un proceso lento pero continuo. Siempre tuvimos la actitud y la ambición de tocar el mayor tiempo posible, no necesariamente tanto como sea posible. La mayoría de nosotros tenemos familia y niños, Peter incluso tiene tres de ellos ahora, y siempre nos aseguramos de que haya formas para que crezcamos como individuos fuera de SUMA sin dejar de ser parte de SUMA. No te preocupes, aparecerá nueva música.

Although you think the questions are short, we wanted to be explorers in search of answers in the deepest entrails of the body of SUMA. And, it is often difficult to find words that do not sound repetitive in an interview. A band is more than a album or a musical instrument. For that reason before the visit of the Swedish band, SUMA, who will be in Spain next week, we wanted to scratch more in their skin and in their mind to know more of what they have taught us with their music. Let's go there… Johan and Erik.

What is it that SUMA can demonstrate on stage, to a listener who has just met you?
- First and foremost SUMA are supposed to be experienced live. It is a full body experience, a focused machine of relentless power that will reach into the depth of your soul. The live experience is like a meditation or a trip and either you are in or you are out, there is no middle ground here.

Are there cardinal points in the structures that consolidate the band, or is it all pure chance? Tell us if you have stable bases when creating ...
- SUMA has had the same idea of creating music from the very beginning almost two decades ago. It usually starts with a riff, or rather THE riff, that we explore, turn and twist, until every member are satisfied with the end product. We do not realease or perform anything that we are not 100% proud of. Most of our "songs" are really just one riff, even though we are pretty good at hiding it with variations of the same theme.

Who is "Suma"? And we do not talk about the people that compose it, but about the thought that each of them.
- SUMA is our way of expressing our selfs in exactly the way we want, with no filters and no concern to anything or anyone but ourselves. SUMA is a ‘blessing’ and we are fortunate, and proud, to be able to do this. With SUMA we get to experience the world and influence it and the people we meet, with the music we make and how we conduct ourselves as human beings. We always tried to promote a way of living more than anything else. If no one does it for you, do it your self and be nice to people around you.

Your sound. Raw, direct, forceful ... chaos seizes our minds and dismembers our memory. You drag a very deep sound, a power that can be grasped by hands. What do you think about the sound that they have been "throwing to the ears of the crowd" during your career?
- There is great’s sound that's been emerging the last 20 years, many unique takes on the heavy. There is also a lot that is not very interesting at all. Above all it is great that heavy music start to become more popular, but always when things get popular there will be less sincere people that want a piece of the pie.

If we look for a quick adjective to define you, what would be the 'suma'?
- Heavy.


Now talking about you... Who are you and what do you contribute to SUMA, musically, mentally and physically?
- I am Erik, the drummer of SUMA. Outside of the band I am a father, husband and yoga teacher. Musically I contribute with cutting up the patterns in unexpected ways and adding some sort of mathematical dimension to the existing riff. This also drives the others crazy at times. Since I am a yoga practitioner I can bring enormous power to my drumming in a very concntrated way, something that is quite visible to the live audience. We also put the drums at the front of the stage so the live performance becomes more of a ritual we're SUMA are like one mass rather than individuals.

On Sunday the 29th, you start the European tour in the famous festival of Portugal, Barroselas Metal Fest, and on Monday you start engines for the Spanish dates. 5 stops, 5 cities. Road and more road, great nights and good music. Are you ready? How are the SUMA forces facing this tour?
- Hehe, we where born ready and are so excited to come back to the Iberian peninsula! We had a little different preparation for this tour since I was away for three weeks on a yoga boot camp. We had a good run through of the songs we will bring and are just happy to tour again. We all love to play live!

Finally... after all the concerts, trips, and a well-deserved rest, in the future, what awaits SUMA? Continue presenting the last album? Do they compose new themes...?
- In fact we do compose new themes, even though it is a slow, but on going, process. We always had the attitude and ambition to play for as long as possible, not necessarily as much as possible. Most of us have family's and kids, Peter even has three of them now, and we always made sure that there is ways for us to grow as individuals outside of SUMA while still being a part of SUMA. No worries, new music will appear.
